The Serval is a medium-sized wild cat native to the grasslands, wetlands and forest edges of sub-Saharan Africa — found from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, and south through Tanzania, Zambia and into South Africa. It is one of the most specialised hunters in the cat family — its extraordinarily long legs (the longest relative to body size of any cat), its large, oval, independently rotating ears and its distinctive spotted coat are all precise adaptations to life in the tall grass savannah, where the ability to see above the grass, hear below it and leap over it with explosive power is the difference between a successful hunt and an empty stomach.
The Serval's hunting technique is one of the most remarkable in the animal kingdom. It stands motionless in the grass, rotating its enormous ears like satellite dishes to triangulate the precise location of prey moving underground or beneath the grass — then launches itself into the air in a high, arcing leap, coming down with both forepaws extended to pin its prey with extraordinary precision. This technique is so effective that the Serval has the highest hunting success rate of any wild cat — catching prey on approximately 50% of its attempts, compared to 20–25% for lions and leopards.
The Serval is also one of the most vocal wild cats — producing a wide range of calls including chirps, purrs, growls, hisses and a distinctive high-pitched cry used for long-distance communication. It is primarily solitary and nocturnal, marking large territories with scent and living a largely self-sufficient life in the African grasslands.
Tragically, the Serval is increasingly threatened by the illegal exotic pet trade — its striking appearance and relatively manageable size making it a target for capture and sale. This trade is cruel, dangerous and deeply harmful to wild populations. The Serval is not a pet. It is a wild animal with complex physical, social and psychological needs that no domestic environment can meet.
